So my AP Chemistry class is putting together a magic show for the Lower Schoolers (they think it's magic but it's actually just chem lol). This is my act for the show. I trapped a rainbow into a graduated cylinder. Can anyone tell me the chemistry behind this trick? I'll give you a llama if you can!
Answer: Here's what I did. Each solution has a different density but they are all made up of the same solution. Here's the trick. The red color is the least dense because it is 100% water. The orange has 10% sugar in it. As you go up the color spectrum you increase the amount of sugar by 10%. So Yellow: 20%, Green: 30%, Blue: 40%, Indigo: 50%, and Violet: 60%. Because the mass/volume ratio increases so does the density. Yay chemistry!
